Jeffrey Webb, Former
FIFA vice president, pleaded not guilty to federal racketeering and bribery
charges in connection with a massive corruption scandal last Saturday. Edward
O'Callaghan, his attorney, did not comment.
Webb, which was an official
arrested in a dawn raid in Switzerland in May, agreed to be extradited on
Wednesday by FBI agents. The other officials are fighting extradition.
Webb, the head of
CONCACAF, the soccer governing body of North America and the Caribbean, handed
over his passports and was released on $10 million bond. He will be confined to
a home and electronic monitored in New York.
It was reported that, the
former Cayman Islands banker began telling authorities what he knows about a
24-year scheme. In the scheme, the FIFA officials enriched themselves by
rigging organization elections, selling marketing and hosting rights to soccer
tournaments and World Cup qualifying matches.
According to U.S. officials,
Webb’s cooperation could set a stage for a scrum among high-ranking soccer
officials. Moreover, any other who is willing to offer information will be
