Michel Platini announces intention to be a FIFA President
Michel Platini announced
on Wednesday that his intented to stand as a candidate for the FIFA presidency.
Platini wrote a letter
to the 209 member associations of world football's governing body: "This
was a very personal, carefully considered decision, one in which I weighed up
the future of football alongside my own future. I was also guided by the
esteem, support and encouragement that many of you have shown me." Mr
Platini pledged that he would work tirelessly "in the interests of
football".
Platini is a
60-year-old former France and Juventus midfielder. As a player, Platini won
three Ballon d'Or titles, European Cup, Cup Winners' Cup and Super Cup with
Juventus. He also helped France to European Championship to success in 1984 and
third place at the 1986 World Cup. Platini was elected UEFA president for a
third term in March, while he stood unopposed. As the president of European
soccer’s governing body and a FIFA vice president, Platini is the most
high-profile candidate to enter the special election to replace Sepp Blatter as
FIFA president. Mr. Blatter, 79, announced in June that he would surrender the
post he has held since 1998 amid the worst corruption scandal in the
organization’s history.
Candidatures must be
submitted by 26 October 2015, and the election will take place at an
Extraordinary FIFA Congress in Zurich on 26 February 2016.
